Milestone State Conference Underscores
Bilingual Education Leadership and History
NMABE observed its milestone 35th Annual
State Bilingual Education Conference in April, a
landmark achievement for New Mexico. Although
NMABE had its official beginnings in
1969-inexistencenowfor38years-theorganization
hosted the National Association for Bilingual
Education (NABE) Conference for three
years.
Dr. Jaramillo was an early pioneer in
ESL and Bilingual Education in New
Mexico, serving as the organization's second
President in 1969-70. She received
the Joseph M. Montoya Award from
NMABE in 1994-1995. This award, named
in recognition of the late State and US
Senator Joseph M. Montoya, was created
to recognize significant contributions to
bilingual education at the national level.
Over 650 bilingual education professionals
attended the conference at the Embassy Suites
Hotel in Albuquerque, April 26-28. The site
offered students, presenters, keynoters and participants
alike a comfortable setting for learning
and networking.
